Go to the gym five days a week, watching your diet and still not see the results you want? New research may explain why: A gene can mess with your hunger levels, making packing on pounds, according to the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Previous research has linked the gene called FO with obesity, but researchers do not know exactly how the gene made people gain weight. So for this study, researchers examined 359 people for the FO gene and measured their levels of the hormone gremlin, an appetite stimulant before and after a test meal.
Before meals, gremlin levels of each were essentially the same. But after the meal, people who do not have the FO gene have seen a much greater drop in gremlin levels. In addition, gremlin levels increased back to its pre-meal much faster for people who had the FO gene.
When your body is functioning normally, stop gremlin after eating because there is no reason for you to feel hungry. However, this research suggests that the FO gene tells your body to keep producing the hormone anyway, said study author Rachel Batter, PhD, director of obesity and bariatric services at University College Hospital in London.
Unless undergo genetic testing, it is impossible to know for sure if you have the FO gene. But even if you have not, does not mean you are doomed to be overweight.
If you feel you are hungry 24/7, try to eat more lean protein and more time for aerobic exercise, suggesting Batter. Previous research has shown that both strategies are effective ways to reduce the levels of gremlin. Feeling like I was always hungry all the time? Try these four easy ways to keep cravings under control.
